JabRef is an open-source bibliography manager. The native file format used by JabRef is BibTeX, the standard LaTeX bibliography format. It runs on the Java VM (version 1.8 or newer) and works equally well on Windows, Linux, and macOS.

JabRef is an application created to provide you with the means to create and maintain a bibliography reference database.

It displays a comprehensive interface that becomes more intuitive as you progress to work with it. Its functionality revolves around the BibTeX databases, which store the information you add to the bibliography.

BibTeX is an application and a bibliography file format written by Oren Patashnik and Leslie Lamport for the LaTeX document preparation system. General information can be found on the CTAN BibTeX package information page. The app also supports BibLaTeX.

Bibliographies generated by LaTeX and BibTeX from a BibTeX file can be formatted to suit any reference list specifications through the use of different BibTeX and BibLaTeX style files.

When creating a database you can add entry types such as Article, Conference, Masters thesis, Patent, Proceedings, Book, Inproceedings, Booklet, Manual, and Techreport. For each of the categories, you can add information about the author, title, journal, volume, pages, cross-references, keywords, URLs, and timestamps.

With this software, you can also attach documents that correspond to the information found inside the database. The documents can be located on your computer or on the Internet, as you can easily access URLs from within the application. Unlike in BibTeX, the added links in JabRef are displayed as a customizable list that can easily be accessed from the editor.
