Facebook

Facebook is a website where people can create free profiles and connect online with friends, coworkers, and people they don’t know. It lets people share photos, music, videos, articles, and their own ideas and thoughts with as many people as they want.

People send “friend requests” to people they might know or might not know.

More than 1 billion people use Facebook.
Once both profiles are accepted, they are linked so that both users can see what the other posts. “Facebookers” can post almost anything to their “timeline,” which is a snapshot of what is going on in their social circle at any given time. They can also chat privately with other online friends.

On their profiles, people write about themselves. Whether it’s what they do for a living, where they go to school, their age, or other personal information, many users post a lot of information that their friends and other people can easily find. Users can also “like” other pages that they find interesting. For example, a fan of Liverpool FC can keep up with the team by following its Facebook page. There, users can post comments and get club news, pictures, and other things.

Facebook used to be the most popular website among young people who have grown up with technology. But many teens are leaving Facebook for sites like Snapchat and Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.

Those who still use it do so to connect with other people. Teenagers are used to doing more than one thing at a time, so using Facebook or any other social networking site is almost like second nature to them. Young people can try out different parts of who they are on social networking sites. Teens like them because they can find their own, honest voice online and share it with their friends. Some teens feel like they can be more honest online than in the real world, maybe because they think the virtual world is safer.

Teenagers love Facebook because they can make their profile look how they want it to. In the same way that older people might have put up posters of their favourite bands or soccer teams on their bedroom walls, young people now use pictures, music, videos, and comments to personalise their own space online. The site has also made it much easier to talk to each other. Teens don’t have to pick up the phone and call their friend’s house to talk to them. Instead, they can talk to their friends instantly and directly on Facebook. Even email, which is another fairly new technology, is not as important to teens as Facebook, which is where they do most of their talking.
