VLC Media Player for Mac (formerly VideoLAN Client) is a lightweight multimedia player that supports a wide range of audio and video formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various video streaming media protocols. On a high-bandwidth network, it can also be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6.

VLC for macOS 2.1 is a significant update, with a new audio core, hardware decoding and encoding, porting to handheld devices, readiness for Ultra-HD recording, and extra care taken to accommodate further formats.

VLC Media Player For Mac OS

Rincewind has a new rendering pipeline for audio, with better efficiency, volume, and device management, to improve VLC for Mac audio support. It supports many new devices inputs, formats, metadata and improves most of the current ones, preparing for the next-gen codecs.

VLC media player requires Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later. It runs on any 64bit Intel-based Mac. Previous devices are supported by older releases. Note that the first generation of Intel-based Macs equipped with Core Solo or Core Duo processors is no longer supported.

VLC Media Player For Mac FAQs

How to Stream Videos and Music Over the Network Using VLC?

VLC includes a fairly easy-to-use streaming feature that can stream music and videos over a local network or the Internet. You can tune into the stream using VLC or other media players.

Connecting to a Stream

To tune in to a stream, click the Media menu in VLC on another computer and select Open Network Stream.

Assuming you used HTTP, enter an address like http://IP.Address:8080.

(If you specified a custom path for your HTTP stream in the Path box, you’ll need to specify the custom path here. For example, if you specified /path as your custom path, you’d enter http://IP.Address:8080/path in the box here.)

After clicking Play, the stream should start playing. To control playback remotely, try setting up VLC’s web interface. If you encounter an error, make sure VLC isn’t being blocked by a firewall on the streaming system.[/vc_toggle]

How can I take screenshots?

To take a snapshot of the video displayed by VLC, you just need to press the pre-defined snapshot hotkey:

  • Windows/Linux/Unix: Ctrl + Alt + S
  • Mac OS X: Command + Alt + S

To change it, go to Preferences → Interface → Hotkeys settings, check Advanced Options, and set Take video snapshot.

You can also take a snapshot via the menu Video → Snapshot.

To change the snapshot format or directory, go to Preferences → Video.

How To Zoom Into Video In VLC Media Player?

Some users will find the Zoom option under the Video menu useful. It might not seem to do anything if the video is open in full screen or in the maximized window mode. But if the video is in the Window mode, it will have an effect.

To use the zoom feature that comes with VLC, do the following-

  • Open a video in windowed mode (it should not cover the entire screen area).
  • Navigate to Video > Zoom > (1:4 Quarter, 1:2 Half, 1:1 Original, 2:1 Double). [Hotkey- Z or Shift Z to cycle these options].
  • The window size changes to quarter, half, double or original of the video resolution.
