GIMP For Free GNU Image Manipulation Program Features
GIMP is a versatile graphics manipulation package. This page should help you get a taste of what GIMP is capable of.
Customizable Interface
Each task requires a different environment and GIMP Graphic Image Manipulation Program allows you to customize the view and behavior the way you like it. Starting from the widget theme, allowing you to change colors, widget spacing’s and icon sizes to custom tool sets in the toolbox. The interface is moduli zed into so called docks, allowing you to stack them into tabs or keep them open in their own window. Pressing the tab key will toggle them hidden.
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) features a great full screen mode allowing you to not only preview your artwork but also do editing work while using most of your screen estate.
Photo Enhancement
Numerous digital photo imperfections can be easily compensated for using GIMP. Fix perspective distortion caused by lens tilt simply by choosing the corrective mode in the transform tools. Eliminate lens’ barrel distortion and vignetting with a powerful filter but a simple interface.
The included channel mixer gives you the flexibility and power to get your B/W photography to stand out the way you need.
Digital Retouching
GIMP is ideal for advanced photo retouching techniques. Get rid of unneeded details using the clone tool, or touch up minor details easily with the new healing tool. With the perspective clone tool, it’s not difficult to clone objects with perspective in mind just as easily as with the orthogonal clone.
Hardware Support
This is a Graphic Image Manipulation Program that includes very unique support for various input devices out of the box. Pressure and tilt sensitive tablets, but also a wide range of USB or MIDI controllers. You can bind often-used actions to device events such as rotating a USB wheel or moving a MIDI controller’s slider. Change the size, angle or opacity of a brush while you paint, bind your favorite scripts to buttons. Speed up your workflow!
File Formats
The file format support ranges from the common likes of JPEG (JFIF), GIF, PNG, TIFF to special use formats such as the multi-resolution and multi-color-depth Windows icon files. The architecture allows extending GIMP’s format capabilities with a plug-in. You can find some rare format support in the GIMP plugin registry.
Thanks to the transparent virtual file system, it is possible to load and save files to from remote locations using protocols such as FTP, HTTP or even SMB (MS Windows shares) and SFTP/SSH.
To save disk space, any format can be saved with an archive extension such as ZIP, GZ or BZ2 and GIMP will transparently compress the file without you needing to do any extra steps.
Original Artwork Creation
GIMP gives artists the power and flexibility to transform images into truly unique creations.
Graphic Design Elements
GIMP is used for producing icons, graphical design elements, and art for user interface components and mockups
Key Component in a Desktop Publishing Workflow
GIMP provides top-notch color management features to ensure high-fidelity color reproduction across digital and printed media.

GIMP – GNU Image Manipulation Program FAQs
Are You Trying To Develop A Photoshop Killer App?
No. Most generic image editors look like Photoshop simply because Adobe’s application was among the first image editors as we know them now, so developers tend to stick to what people know — in general terms.
I Do A Lot Of Desktop Publishing Related Work. Will You Ever Support CMYK?
Yes, better support for CMYK has been on our roadmap for a long time. One of the ideas, how we want to make this work, was introduced by user interaction architect Peter Sikking at Libre Graphics Meeting 2009 and later — in his two-part article in his company’s blog: 1, 2. Please take some time to read up on that.
I Do Not Recognize GIMP’s User Interface. It’s Different From What I See In All Tutorials. What Do I Do?
The software developer switched to a dark user interface theme and a symbolic icon theme by default in version 2.10. If you absolutely want to revert it, here is what you do:
Go to Edit > Preferences > Interface > Theme
and change the theme from Dark to System.
Then go to Edit > Preferences > Interface > Icon Theme
and change the theme from Symbolic to Legacy. Changes will apply immediately. Click OK to confirm.
Can I Use GIMP Commercially?
Yes, you can. GIMP is free software, it doesn’t put restrictions on the kind of work you produce with it.
What’s The GIMP’s License, And How Do I Comply With It?
GIMP is distributed under terms of General Public License v3 and later. In a nutshell, this means:
- You are free to use GIMP, for any purpose
- You are free to distribute GIMP
- You can study how GIMP works and change it
- You can distribute changed versions of GIMP
Note that once you distribute modified version of GIMP, you also must publish your changes to the source code under GPLv3+ as well.
