Mod DB : World’s Largest Website To Support Indie Game Development

Mod DB is the largest website dedicated to supporting independent development of games (user-generated game content), including mods, addons, and DLC. The aim of Mod DB is to unite developers, players and their ideas, empowering them to shape the games we play.

History of Mod DB

As per Wikipedia source, Scott Reismanis stated in an interview, “My first site was Gamerzoned, which became Gaminzone, then Chaosrealm and Modrealm”. ModRealm was refactored and improved upon to include more developer tools. After months of additional development, it was rebranded as Mod DB. Reisman has coded the site engine himself, which would cover all of the mod-related subjects. Mod DB 1.0 debuted in June 2002. It quickly gained a group of core members who became the basis for the active community which the site has today. In 2004, the second version of the site was released, and many new features were implemented along with a complete site redesign. Version three followed in December 2005, once again redesigning the site’s organization and aesthetics.

Mod DB Purpose

The purpose of Mod DB is to list the mods, files, tutorials, and information of any games that are capable of being modded with user-made content. Community involvement is strongly encouraged, and any game mod with a website is allowed to post a screenshot gallery, news, and requests for help. Scott’s intentions, from the beginning, were to get the community heavily involved in the creation and development of the website. To this end, the most active members were chosen as moderators and administrators. The core staff generally remain the same, while lower positions are heavily rotated among trainee moderators and administrator candidates. The site’s staff mostly act as chaperones or librarians, keeping appropriate content available to the public and featuring the more exceptional content.

With version 4, turning the power-up. The community-based features mean that it’s not some mysterious editor in an ivory tower writing reviews – it’s anybody who can put pen to paper. The screenshots aren’t limited to some airbrushed press releases – they’re taken by the gamers. Perhaps most importantly, opinions on gaming are collected from a vast community – they are the combined feelings and views of anybody who has taken a moment to make themselves heard.

The best way to get the best content is by relying on the shared experience and skills of the community. Someone cannot hope to be experts in everything, but all of us are experts in something. By providing a way for people to interact within their skills – and to seek out new ones – we hope to give you the ability to easily achieve your goals by learning from others who have chosen to share their knowledge.

Playing the games is just as big a part of what we all do as helping the developers to strut their stuff. Being able to customize your games is at the heart of everything DBolical does, and we aim to make it as easy as possible. From simple extra maps through to entire conversions and even whole new games, we hope to put what you want to play at your fingertips. We hope you enjoy using Mod DB to change the way you and others play games as much as we enjoy running it.

Mod of the Year

Mod DB’s Mod of the Year competition, the ‘Golden Spanner’ awards, aims to set the industry standard in awarding inventive and high-quality mods. Mods are chosen via a community vote and are then reviewed by staff to produce the final list of winners. The competition aims to encourage all fields of modding, with different categories such as graphics and gameplay, as well as a traditional ‘best mod‘ winner.
